Each month, we thank an individual, business and/or organization who supports our efforts. This month we would like to recognize a unique and very special volunteer, Catherine Delaney.
Catherine first approached the Milford Youth Center with an inspiring idea: to launch a STEM program for local youth. She presented her vision to our Youth Commission, who were incredibly impressed by both her passion and the potential impact of the program. Because Catherine’s focus was
on a younger age group than we typically serve at the Center, she brought her program to Woodland Elementary School, where it has become an outstanding success.
We stayed in touch, and a few months later, the Milford Youth Center was awarded a grant through the Milford Cultural Council, and we were also able to use a portion of funding from an existing grant through Youthworks along with funding raised by Craftroots Brewing. Together through these grants and funding, we were able to purchase a teaching computer and a 3D printer—an area in which Catherine has tremendous expertise. She was the first person we reached out to for guidance, and she helped us compare options and explained 
which would be best for our needs and the ages we work with.
Despite balancing her volunteer work, leading the STEM program at Woodland, schoolwork, and extracurricular activities, Catherine was able to lead a 3D printing program at the Youth Center. Thanks to her dedication, our very first 3D Design Lab program was launched!
The 3D Design Lab was a four-day program consisting of one-hour sessions each day. Catherine introduced the youth to the basics of 3D design and printing, taught them how to use the software to create their own models, and guided them through the printing process. By the end of the program, every child had successfully designed and printed their own 3D object. 
Catherine was able to introduce this brand-new creative technology, one that perhaps might not have been one that they would have been exposed to in these earlier years. We are incredibly grateful to have Catherine as part of our volunteer team. She is always willing to answer questions or help us solve any problems. Whether it’s clearing a jammed 
filament, helping with a paused print, or helping our staff learn the ins and outs of this brand-new technology. While 3D printing was completely new to our staff, it is second nature to her! Catie, thank you so much for your time and knowledge, you are appreciated!
