Brian, our MYC staff member and co-leader of our Youth Council group, with Ava Merrill had the following comments to make about running the group this year!
“May concludes our 2024-2025 run of the Milford Youth Council! As said last month, we did as much work as we could so that we could take this month to relax and reflect on what we’ve done over the year. We delved deep into our work and thought critically about our achievements, thinking about what we liked, what we thought we did well in, and what we could have put a little more time and effort into. All of us want to do this again next year, so thinking about these things gave us a head start and will allow us to do so much more with our time!
This school year was incredibly productive for us. In addition to attending and assisting events such as Fright Night and Thanksgiving with the Youth Center and the Veterans’ Parade outside of it, we embarked on our own projects. Some of the most fruitful of projects, included our sock collection, where we promoted and bought into a collection period for new Men’s socks intended for, and ultimately donated to Pathway to a Better Life! The children spent the better part of two months planning and advertising this, and the successful collection is entirely because of their work! It was the cherry on top of a year of volunteering and meeting with successful and insightful figures!
While loud and gaudy rewards aren’t the point of the Youth Council – we’re here to volunteer and do good, after all – we feel it best to spend our last meeting of the year amongst each other, having fun while eating good food.
As someone running this group for the first time, I truly believe that these children have punched well above their weight in doing good things for their community, and the habits they’ve fostered here will send them well on their way in becoming compassionate leaders in their community. I hope that they continue this next year, and am trying my best to see them too it!”
