The MYC Youth Council is a leadership and community service-based group, created to encourage MYC members to help make a difference in the community through facilitating several youth community events as well as taking part in volunteer opportunities! Registered after-school members, ranging in ages from 8-18, can join this program and commit to making changes together!
We are proud of the Youth Council members and all their hard work thus far. We look forward to meeting, planning and being a part of many more community events and those of the Milford Youth Center. You can join at any time!
The month of January was a very important month for our kids volunteering under the Milford Youth Council! Together, we utilized our Tuesday meetings to set out a plan for how to help our community over the next few weeks, creating our own opportunities to better our town in absence of given plans.
January was a great month for introspection, taking the time to better ourselves and put us in the best position possible to execute our plans for February and beyond. We set out New Years’ resolutions, both personal ones as well as larger goals for the Youth Council as a whole. We also used January’s other significances to reflect on issues of racism by using some of our meeting time to educate our kids on the importance of Martin Luther King Jr. as a social justice figure and what issues still linger from that period.
January wasn’t just a time to better us, however. We have started drafting plans on how to help people in need around our town, no matter what disadvantages they face! We considered places and groups, such as homeless and animal shelters in our town, and brainstormed things we could do to make things just a little bit more comfortable for their operations, such as the collection of canned food and clothes, or ways we could fundraise money for them. This represents a step forward in our goals as youth council members: rather than simply helping wherever we can at community events, we are now independently etching out plans of our own to do that same thing, especially during cold winter months where that type of help may be harder to come by.
This month has been one where we got the ball rolling on various projects, and we hope to keep that momentum going as we wrap up January and work into February! We hope to update you as our plans come to fruition!
