We cannot believe we are already done with summer camp with 100 campers attending this summer! Campers are able to enjoy activities every day at the Center with our awesome staff! Campers are also able to enjoy free breakfast and lunch due collaboration of SFSP, Hockomock Area YMCA and the Milford School Food & Nutrition Services department. Check out all the fun stuff we have done over the last three weeks!
Week 4 of camp started with Michael Bent of “AbraKIDabra” putting on an amazing magic show and gave the campers a few tips on how some tricks work! On Tuesday, we had a sunny afternoon filled with swimming, sand sports and a picnic lunch at Mendon Town Beach! Wednesday the campers enjoyed free time in the morning, designing superhero shields for their art project and an afternoon of swimming at Goldfish! On Thursday, we had our Canobie Lake Park field trip! 60 youth enjoyed rides, water rides, a picnic, and a special treat if the campers chose to get one. Overall, it was a successful, enjoyable field trip! To wrap week 4, on Friday the campers had a great day filled with games in the game room, sports in the gym, hanging out in the kitchen and of course, popcorn and our movie for “Superhero” week; The Incredibles!
Week 5 of summer camp started with a rainy Monday but that did not stop our campers from having a great time playing Capture the Flag in the gym and many other games in the game room! In the afternoon we were lucky to have Sanctuary and Zoo Animal Adventures out of Bolton, MA visit with many animals such as an albino python, a crocodile, a lion head bunny, a snapping turtle, and many others. Because Tuesday also turned out to be a very rainy day, we had to cancel our trip to Mendon Town Beach and instead played organized games of soccer, volleyball, a Wii Sports competition, played Jeopardy and had some free time. We were also fortunate to have Congressman Jake Auchincloss visit the center in the afternoon. On Wednesday the campers enjoyed free time in the morning then had a Dinosaur related arts and craft where they were to design and color their own snap bracelet then enjoyed an afternoon of swimming at Goldfish swim school! On Thursday, we took our campers for the first time, to the Boston Science Museum. It was a great success, the children were able to visit many exhibits, walk through mazes, run up and down the piano stairs, test gravity, sit in a mock spaceship, stand next to a life size t-rex, watch the “Mt. Everest” movie in the Omni theater and so much more! We wrapped up week 5 with a gardening activity, led by long time volunteer Phyllis, who geared this week’s project toward our younger campers, they also played games, had some free time and all the campers watched the movie, “Night at the Museum”.
Week 6 was filled with “color wars” games and activities, all with the purpose of earning points for the 7 different teams. Campers were selected at random to create groups of a specific color. Throughout the week teams competed to earn points, at the end of the week, the winning team will be announced on the final day with prizes for the winners! On Monday, the campers were assigned to their team color and then each camper tie-dyed t-shirts their team color. The afternoon was busy at Fino Field with the beginning of the Color Wars where teams were paired up to play kickball! Tuesday was a huge hit filled with activities all day for the teams to earn points. We had a Basketball shoot off, Soccer Penalty kicks, Balloon Bonanza, Golf Putting Challenge, Nerf Wars, Puzzle-mania, and Pictionary! All the campers loved it and had so much fun! We wrapped up the day with an obstacle course for more points to be earned! Wednesday was filled with music, dancing and loads of fun. Each team worked together to come up with ideas to create their Color Wars flag. They sketched out their thoughts then painted their ideas in their team color on the flag. They also had an intense game of Musical Chairs and swam at Goldfish swim school in the afternoon! Thursday, we held our annual scavenger hunt around the town of Milford. The campers divided into their color teams and headed out with staff to solve clues about the town, collect items and take pictures for proof! They all had a great time! In the afternoon, we had our water-slide-jumpy and snow cones. It was a great day! Friday, our final day of summer camp! Although we were not able to go to Onset beach as we normally do to wrap a summer camp season, we were able to go to Pinz for bowling, arcade games, pizza, and drinks! The kids had fun, and we added the bowling scores into our Color Wars Challenge, leaving Team Green to win the complete challenge! Each camper on Team Green won a gift box filled with small prizes! We ended the day with the ritual of a dance party accompanied by staff singing on stage! Some of the campers were truly emotional as we said goodbye for the summer and to their newfound friends. We encouraged them to remember that the after-school program would be beginning soon, and they would be together again soon here and at school!
