Our 2023 YouthWorks summer program has been off to a great start! This summer we were able to employ 27 youth at 12 different sites. Our youth workers have been very busy at their sites this summer! We are fortunate to partner with Milford Food Service, Milford Youth Center, Milford TV, Nutriforia, Dubble Bubble Laundromat, Milford Parks Department, Milford Facilities, Milford Town Hall, Milford Summer Basketball, Platinum Enterprise and our newest addition, Milford Senior Center!
Along with our youth learning at their jobs, we also have been able to have different professionals come in and talk about their journey in the workforce. Week one we had Nick and Owen from Central One Federal Credit Union join us and talk about the importance of financial literacy. Week two we welcomed Jill, Timothy, and Megan from Milford Regional Hospital. Jill and Megan talked about their jobs dealing with Benefits and the Human Resource Department. Timothy explained his journey to where he is now, working for the social media department for the hospital. Week three the youth participated in a group discussion with Rachel Driscoll, associate principal at Stacy Middle School. During her time with us, we learned about her journey in the education system and discussed different opportunities to help make students’ time in middle school better. Lastly, week 4 we got another visit from Milford Regional Medical Center. This time we heard from Millie from the blood bank, Jess from the Emergency Department, and Skylah from sterile processing. We learned about their different career journeys and what it is like to work in their fields.
Lastly to round out the month of July, we have our youth workers of the week, Jordan D, Yasmin, and Jordyn H. Jordan D has done a phenomenal job working at Double Bubble Laundromat. Yasmin has been an excellent summer camp counselor for the Milford Youth Center and works one day a week at the Milford Town Hall. Jordyn H has been a great help at Milford Facilities lending a hand at whatever he is asked to do.
We are so proud of our youth workers this summer and can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer brings! The Youth Center is able to oversee and offer these employment opportunities through the Commonwealth Corporation under the Commonwealth of Massachusetts YouthWorks Program and MassHire Central Career Center . The Youth Center received a $203,127.74 contract from the State to run this program during the summer, in which we are very grateful for!
