The MYC is excited to announce that we are officially launching our Book Club again starting in November! Every month we recognize a theme that highlights current societal issues and injustices, commemorates groups of people or events, and celebrates influential people in the lives of young readers. Each month the students will have the opportunity to pick what they read based on the monthly observance!
In November the MYC is observing Native American Heritage Month! The youth will have to opportunity to pick from four books:
- Rez Dogs, by: Joseph Bruchac
- Two Roads, by: Joseph Bruchac
- Five Little Indians, by: Michelle Good
- Ancestor Approved: Intertribal Stories for Kids, by: Cynthia Leitich Smith
The books are written in different styles and have different difficulty levels, which gives the youth the opportunity to read at their own pace comfortably! Every week on Tuesdays in November, book club will meet at the MYC where they will be asked questions that encourages the youth to talk about the books they are reading individually. Since they have multiple options on what to read, they will have different perspectives on each question based on the book they choose!
Our five meetings in November will be on Tuesday 11/1, 11/8, 11/15, 11/22, and 11/29! At our first meeting the youth will choose their book that they will rent out from the Youth Center! If you want your child to participate you will need to sign them up in advanced due to limited space!
