MYC Youth Council is a leadership and community service-based organization comprised of Afterschool members of all ages striving to make a difference in the community through facilitating several youth community events as well as taking part in volunteer opportunities! This month Youth Council has been very busy involving themselves in various events and helping around the Youth Center!
For our first meeting of the month, the older members of Youth Council were given a presentation by New Hope Inc.’s Cheylsea Federle on Healthy Relationships. During her seminar, we did some fun activities identifying traits of healthy relationships versus “red flags” versus emotional abuse, and everything in-between! The kids and I learned so much and now know what to look out for when getting into a new relationship in the future! Thank you so much to Cheylsea and everyone else at New Hope Inc.!
Our second meeting this month got us up out of our chairs and using our hands to assemble some lawn games for our Summer Camp to utilize on non-field trip days! We would also like to thank Ana Paulino of U Matter and Michael’s Mission 97 for coming in again to assist us in this project, and for bringing us snacks! The kids had so much fun seeing which parts fit into each other, all without directions for the sets! It was a welcome deviation from the average discussion-based meeting! Our third meeting had us planning for District Attorney Joseph D. Early’s Student Wellness Conference, our upcoming Fashion Show, our end of the year party, and our 2019 Time Capsule! The kids were very excited to be involved with so many important decisions, and had some very interesting viewpoints and ideas for each event!
On Monday, May 6th Youth Council member Igor Freeman accompanied our Youth Leadership Councilor Marissa to the Third Annual Milford Family Bridges Night at Woodland Elementary School to help translate all of the programs and services we offer to Portuguese and Spanish-speaking members of the community! We would like to thank Woodland Elementary School and everyone involved with this great event for thinking of us and for putting on such a wonderful service for the community’s ESL families!
On Saturday, May 18th Youth Council members Ernest Dew, Yvy Lima, Jessica Morin, Jake Cahill, and Danica Crim volunteered at the MYC information table and jumpy at this year’s Celebrate Milford! The kids had a great time at Celebrate Milford and were given the opportunity to learn about the responsibility of supervising areas like the jumpy, and everything that goes into preparing for such a large-scale event!
On Thursday, May 23rd Youth Council members Ernest Dew, Jake Cahill, Igor Freeman, and Danica Crim joined Youth Leadership Councilor Marissa and MYC Assistant Director Katie at District Attorney Joseph D. Early’s Student Wellness Conference at Worcester State University! The kids were able to experience some of WSU’s campus, and had a great time learning about addiction, the dangers of vaping, and internet safety thanks to the informative and fun presentations put on by Improbable Players, the 84 Movement, and Dynamic Influence! We would like to thank DA Early for including us in this incredible event, and the wonderful speakers for taking the time to educate the youth of Worcester County about the dangers of partaking in risky behaviors!
