On November 2nd we held our first cooking and nutrition class. This initiative is in part funded by a CHNA-6 grant we received earlier this year. This program will focus on increasing physical activity and fruit and vegetable consumption, switching from sugary drinks to water, choosing whole grain and healthy fat foods, and limiting screen time. While enforcing these healthy principals we will also be incorporating cooking skills, as the kids participate in our meal preparation classes that happen weekly on Tuesdays. Each month will be themed; November being, “mini meals you can make yourself’. This week the kids made mini pizzas on whole wheat pitas; the idea being, this is something they can make for themselves in the toaster oven when they arrive home from school. We had a huge interest in this class and hope to maintain the popularity by keeping this and all of our programs fun, yet educational, here at the Youth Center. We would also like to extend a huge thank you to Ron Taylor for donating over $500 of kitchen supplies for the program!
